Mass. now has 10 Baby-Friendly facilities!

Emerson Hospital and Martha’s Vineyard Hospitals were just designated Baby-Friendly, becoming the state’s ninth and tenth Baby-Friendly facilities. Emerson, with 1,129 births per year, and Martha’s Vineyard, with 144 births per year (according to most recent state data), bring the total of births in Baby-Friendly facilities from 13.1% to 14.8%. Over half of Massachusetts hospitals now are either designated or enrolled on the Baby-Friendly pathway. ┬áThe national average of births occurring in Baby-Friendly facilities is now 18.1% according to the CDC’s 2016 Breastfeeding Report Card. However, Massachusetts is one of few states that has already met the Healthy People 2020 goal of breastfeeding at 6 months of 60.6%, as we are 67.9%. Congratulations to Emerson and Martha’s Vineyard!
